Rafting the Youghiogheny Perhaps 40,000 people live along its shores and yet they may drive by it every day without realizing the opportunities it has for some serious fun. Until this summer, I was one of those people. Me and some friends got together and parked our car at Vanderbilt and another at Layton and we took a heavy duty inflatable raft down the river. The scenery, the fun, exercise, fresh air, and a few light rapids made it one of the best things I had ever done. Eventually one of us will try a canoe but I'd invite anyone to give the river a try. We're not yet ready for the rough waters in the mountains, but maybe we'll get there eventually.
I agree! I spent summers as a child with grandparents in Dawson and never went into the river. It just wasn't done. About 6 years ago, we were in Dawson visiting relatives and one morning rented a canoe at Layton, which was put in at Dawson. It was fantastic! Just so beautiful and peaceful and only one scary rock. We loved it! Yough dwellers, get out there, it is great!
