Pathetic
That people tied animals to trees back then was as cruel and nasty as it is today. I'm so sick of un-caring people who put a chain or rope on an animal's neck and leave them to pace just a few steps back and forth day after day, year after year, until their lives are finished. Yesterday I saw the neighbor come home, walk right past the dog he keeps confined to a dusty or muddy, depending on the weather, patch of ground. Sadly, the dog stood up, walked all the way to the end of the chain, wagging his tail, and the neighbor just walked on by, oblivious to the dog who wanted to greet him. I watched as the dog, for 5 minutes or so, pushed forward on that chain while looking towards the door of the neighbors house. Too many people think that because PA law, as it is written in some code-book, only stipulates that some sort of shelter, food and water is required, as though that is all they need to provide a dog. What a sad existance for those who love to run and play, explore and enjoy life, to be restricted, day after day, month after month, year after year, to the same smalll patch of dirt. Cruel of the Betty whoever you speak of to have left an animal to die tied to a tree!

I omitted a word in the last post. I meant to write Betty's trips couldn't have stopped in 1878. If the articles in the earlier newspapers are correct, the Betty Thorpe found in the census would probably have been Betty's grand daughter, if indeed she was a Thorpe. I haven't had time to check out the deeds at the court house to see when the Thorpe's first owned the property up there.

I am jumping in here. I have been reading the posts about Betty Knox. Over the years the story has changed. I've researched it a little and from early newspapers, etc., I found that Betty's soldier was her husband ( although I have doubts they actually were ever married) a deserter from the British Army. He was from Virginia and ended up in Greenbriar with Betty. He hid in the woods until George Washington was elected President and then became a pillar of the community and came out of hiding. The reason Betty drove the oxen was because he had to stay hidden in fear of being found by the British. He cleared the land for the farm and raised corn and hogs. It is true that the skeleton of the oxen was found tied to a tree at what is now called Betty Knox Park but the events actually took place a hundred years before. It was in 1878 that Betty's trips stopped. You can refer to the Daily Courier Aug 9, 1919, page 1 and July 27, 1921 for info. In 1932, a man by the name of William Forrest, from Somerset, KY wrote the story again and claimed he was their kin but in researching the story further, I am thinking he went forward about 100 years to make the story fit into his family. Since that writing, the newer dates have been used. Tucker Run is supposed to run through the home place and some refer to the area as Tucker Valley but the newspaper claims it was in Greenbriar. Oliver Martin of near Rippling Water retold the story using the 1800 dates too but I can't remember what year I found his article in the newspaper. Earlier papers state it was during the Revolutionary War 1775 - 1783. George Washington was elected President in 1789.
