RE: Pechins Cafe You actually ate there? That was the dirtiest place I've ever seen selling food to the public. I had the displeasure of eating there in high school with some friends and I'll never forget the scene burned into my mind. Wild eyed kids being beat by their overweight parents on full display added to the demented entertainment. It was like we time warped back to a more barbaric time. The food was cheap, I'll give you that. But I had to fight the flies for it. The trays had the aroma of the last visitor's food on them, gross. The condiment counter featured a giant OPEN bowl of ketchup with a spoon that everyone fingered to serve help themselves. I didn't know it was closed but I pray it doesn't open again. All of those dirty children there were risking food borne illnesses by their slob parents who must have been too lazy to cook for them but took them to eat that slop.
You would be surprised at what goes on at some of the better restaurants. I have seen chefs drop a steak on the floor and toss it on the grill. A number of years ago while eating at the Captain's Lounge in Ocean City, a waiter was going through the swinging kitchen door just as what I mentioned above happened - I couldn't believe it and said something to the waiter. I cancelled my order for steak and chose something else and insisted the door remain open until I got my order. I have also seen people wipe or pick their noses, etc. and then cook, so when you think about that, Pechins really is no different. Have you ever seen someone cooking taste from the spoon and then stir it again?
Pechins Cafe I heard a rumor that pechin's cafe is going to reopen at the laurel mall. I doubt they'll bring back the 19 hamburgers, 29 cent cheeseburgers, or the 5 cent coffee. I really miss the old pechins when it was in Dunbar. You tend to take things for granted until they aren't there anymore.
